PhD in Chemistry: recycling solid electrolytes for solid-state batteries

Find out how recycling and impurities change lithium halide solid electrolytes, so that all-solid-state batteries can be recycled in a closed loop, with a research stay at Université de Lorraine in France. Start 1 January 2027 or as agreed.

About the position

All-solid-state batteries could store more energy more safely than today's batteries, but their solid electrolytes will need to be recycled. This project, run by Uppsala University with KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Université de Lorraine, aims to build the scientific basis for recycling lithium halide solid electrolytes.

You will be based at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory, home of the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre, and study how the recycling process and impurities affect the structure, ion transport and performance of resynthesised electrolytes, to set quality specifications for recycled precursors.

What you will do

  • Synthesise lithium halide solid electrolytes under air- and moisture-free conditions and characterise them by powder X-ray diffraction, SEM-EDS and XPS.
  • Measure ion transport by impedance spectroscopy, and build and test solid-state battery cells.
  • Help develop and evaluate recycled precursors, including a research stay at Université de Lorraine on leaching and purification and collaboration with KTH on crystallisation.
  • Publish and present your results, supervise degree projects, and spend up to 20% of your time teaching or on department work.

Who can apply

  • A master's degree in chemistry, physics, materials science or a related field, or at least 240 credits including 60 at master's level with an independent project of at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge.
  • Very good spoken and written English, and laboratory experience in chemistry, materials science or a related field.
  • Experience of data analysis and scientific writing, and a strong interest in materials or solid-state chemistry and energy storage.
  • Advantages: battery assembly and testing, inorganic synthesis, powder diffraction, ion transport, air-sensitive materials, or hydrometallurgy.

What is offered

  • Full-time, fixed-term employment as a doctoral student in Uppsala.
  • Start on 1 January 2027, or as agreed.
  • The post may be subject to security vetting before you are hired.

How to apply

  • Apply through Uppsala University's recruitment system, linked below, quoting reference UFV-PA 2026/3103, by 9 November 2026.
  • Follow the instructions and answer the questions in the online application form.
