About the position
This PhD is in the Chemical and Bio-Molecular Physics programme at Uppsala's Department of Physics and Astronomy, a group known for using X-rays and lasers to study atoms and molecules on the scale of ångströms and femtoseconds.
You will run experiments in the HELIOS laser laboratory to study how charge shifts within molecules during chemical reactions in liquids, the kind of reactions behind light harvesting and the breaking and making of chemical bonds in catalysis. You will also help develop new femtosecond terahertz and optical spectroscopy equipment.
What you will do
- Design, run and analyse femtosecond laser spectroscopy experiments on liquid-phase reactions.
- Help develop new terahertz and optical spectroscopy instruments.
- Write scientific papers and present results at group meetings and international conferences.
- Work with other experimental and theoretical groups.
Who can apply
- A master's degree in physics, chemistry or a related subject, or at least 240 credits of university study including 60 at master's level with an independent project of at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge.
- Very good spoken and written English.
- Advantages: strong knowledge of molecular physics and spectroscopy, hands-on experience with laser spectroscopy and instruments, and experience with quantum chemistry simulations.
What is offered
- Full-time, fixed-term employment as a doctoral student on a fixed monthly salary.
- Start on 1 February 2027, or as agreed.
- The post may involve a security check before you are hired.
How to apply
- Apply through Uppsala University's recruitment system, linked below, quoting reference UFV-PA 2026/2816.
- There is no cover letter: instead you answer questions in the application form, and your answers are used in the selection.
- Send a CV with your degree certificates and transcripts.
