Who pays
The university itself funds you: you apply for admission and the funding together.
Last verified Oct 11, 2026.

What the funding covers

  • Full or partial scholarships for selected students, covering tuition, accommodation and meals.
  • No registration fee for selected candidates at AIMS Rwanda.
  • Travel support varies by centre; some ask students to find airfare from family, government or charities.

Who can apply

  • A four-year degree in mathematics, or in a science or engineering subject with substantial mathematics, by the time the programme starts.
  • A strong record in mathematics, plus leadership and community service.
  • The programme is designed for African students; check your chosen centre's call for who else it admits.

Which nationalities can apply

Designed for African students; each AIMS centre's call says who else it admits.

How to apply

  1. Apply online through the AIMS application portal; applications usually open on 1 December.
  2. Choose the centre or centres you want to attend.
  3. Submit transcripts, recommendation letters and essays by 31 March, the usual deadline.
  4. Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed before offers are made.

Before you apply: things to know

  • Each centre runs its own call, so dates and terms can differ; AIMS South Africa has a separate intake with an earlier deadline.
  • Check whether airfare is covered at your centre before you accept.
  • The course is intensive and residential, so plan to live on site for the year.
