PhD in Physical Chemistry: making perovskite solar cells last

Study how ions moving inside perovskite films affect the efficiency and lifetime of perovskite solar cells, a cheap and highly efficient technology whose weak point is stability, and find ways to control it. Start 1 January 2027 or as agreed.

About the position

Perovskite solar cells have quickly matched silicon for efficiency and are far easier and cheaper to make, but they do not yet last long enough. Ions moving through the material may be the main reason.

In this PhD at Uppsala's Department of Chemistry, Ångström Laboratory, you will measure ion conduction in perovskite thin films and complete solar cells, find out how it affects performance and stability, and develop ways to control it. The project is part of SOLVE, the Solar Electricity Research Centre Sweden.

What you will do

  • Make perovskite films and solar cells in different designs using wet-chemical methods.
  • Study them, along with vapour-deposited devices from a partner, using electrochemistry and advanced spectroscopy.
  • Plan and run experiments, at first with close guidance and then more independently, and publish and present your results.
  • Spend up to 20% of your time teaching or on department work.

Who can apply

  • A master's degree in chemistry or a related subject with a good grounding in physical chemistry, or at least 240 credits of university study including 60 at master's level with an independent project of at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge gained in Sweden or abroad.
  • Very good spoken and written English.
  • Advantages: experience with solar cell research, thin-film deposition, electrochemistry and spectroscopy.

What is offered

  • Full-time, fixed-term employment as a doctoral student in Uppsala.
  • Start on 1 January 2027, or as agreed.
  • The post may involve a security check before you are hired.

How to apply

  • Apply through Uppsala University's recruitment system, linked below, quoting reference UFV-PA 2026/3013.
  • A short letter on your background and why you suit the post, and a CV of up to two pages.
  • Copies of your bachelor's and master's degrees with transcripts, and a list of publications including your master's thesis.
  • Contact details for at least two referees, and answers to questions in the application form.
