About the position

Uppsala's Department of Chemistry for Life Sciences works in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. About 45 of its more than 100 staff are PhD students, recruited from around the world, and English is the main working language. It sits in the Biomedical Centre, close to biology, pharmacy, medicine and SciLifeLab.

The department is recruiting PhD students for a project that brings together supramolecular chemistry, molecular recognition, catalysis and the chemistry of heavier main-group elements, with the aim of finding new routes for selective synthesis. Advanced multinuclear NMR and other methods for studying molecular structure and interactions are central to the work.

What you will do

  • Carry out research in the project and take doctoral courses.
  • Use advanced NMR and other techniques to study molecular structure and interactions.
  • Spend up to 20% of your time teaching or on department work.

Who can apply

  • At least 240 credits of university study including 60 at master's level with an independent project of at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge.
  • Subject requirement: at least 90 credits of relevant courses, of which at least 40 are in organic chemistry at master's level.
  • Good English, including presenting research clearly in speech and writing, plus teamwork, motivation and independence.
  • Advantages: experimental organic synthesis, catalysis, non-covalent interactions, and techniques such as NMR, UV-Vis, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography and chromatography. Teaching or outreach experience also helps.

What is offered

  • Full-time, fixed-term employment as a doctoral student on Uppsala's doctoral salary scale.
  • Start on 14 January 2027, or as agreed.
  • The post may involve a security check before you are hired.

How to apply

  • Apply through Uppsala University's recruitment system, linked below, quoting reference UFV-PA 2026/2895.
  • Document your relevant experience, for example course results, degree projects, research placements, jobs, reports and any publications.
  • Selection weighs your bachelor's and especially master's studies, your practical and communication skills, and relevant experience.
