About the position

This PhD uses imaging and AI to understand biomaterials, the materials used to rebuild hard and soft tissue, for example in dentistry. You will combine 2D and 3D imaging, including micro- and nano-CT scans, confocal microscopy and electron microscopy, with computer vision and machine learning, to link a material's structure and strength to how well it helps tissue regrow.

The post is in the Biomaterial Science group at the University of Oslo's Faculty of Dentistry, with a focus on regenerative medicine and dental uses. Most of the work takes place in the Oral Research Laboratory. The three-year project is expected to produce three scientific papers and a doctoral thesis.

What you will do

  • Analyse tissues and biomaterials in 2D and 3D with micro- and nano-CT, confocal microscopy and electron microscopy.
  • Measure the structure, porosity and stability of fibrous scaffolds.
  • Develop computer vision and machine learning methods for combined imaging data.
  • Build AI models that predict how cells and exosomes spread through regenerative materials.

Who can apply

  • A BSc and MSc in biomaterials, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, bioinformatics, biology, computer science, medical technology or a related field.
  • Experience with biomedical imaging, data analysis, image processing, machine learning or biomaterials.
  • A documented interest in research that combines biology and computing, and fluent spoken and written English.
  • An advantage: Python or another scientific programming language, and experience with scaffolds, hydrogels or 3D biological models.

What is offered

  • A fully funded, three-year, full-time post as a Doctoral Research Fellow, paid NOK 551,000 to 605,000 a year depending on experience.
  • From the salary, 2% goes to the State Pension Fund, which gives membership of one of Norway's best pension schemes, with good mortgage and insurance terms.
  • Supervision and training in dental biomaterials, imaging and quantitative image analysis, with access to modern laboratories.

How to apply

  • Apply through Jobbnorge, the University of Oslo's recruitment system, linked below. All documents must be in English or a Scandinavian language, and nothing can be added after the deadline.
  • A cover letter of up to two pages on your motivation and how your background fits the project, and a CV.
  • Copies of your diplomas and transcripts, with an explanation of your university's grading system and a Diploma Supplement if you studied outside Scandinavia.
  • Proof of English if the faculty's admission rules require it, any publications, and contact details for two or three referees.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be asked to give a short presentation at interview.
