About the position
The Division of Heat Transfer in LTH's Department of Energy Sciences studies how surface roughness affects turbulent flow, wall friction and heat transfer, especially when the momentum and thermal boundary layers differ in thickness.
The work relies on DNS and LES using OpenFOAM, CaNS and nekRS on GPU and CPU systems, with industrial partners Siemens Energy AB, Ericsson AB, TRATON AB and RISE.
What you will do
- Run and analyse DNS and LES of rough-surface flow and heat transfer on high-performance computers.
- Study the effects of roughness geometry, fluid properties and thermal conditions.
- Derive scaling relations, and develop and validate reduced-order and RANS models.
- Publish in journals, present at conferences and write your thesis. Teaching can take up to 20% of your time.
Who can apply
- A master's or equivalent in a field such as mechanical or energy engineering, engineering physics, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics or computational science.
- A substantial research project or thesis in CFD, turbulence, heat transfer or a close area.
- A record of running and validating simulations independently, shown through research rather than coursework alone.
- Programming experience such as C/C++, Fortran, Python or Matlab, practical high-performance computing, and very good spoken and written English.
What is offered
- A salaried, fixed-term, full-time doctoral post at Lund University. The vacancy gives no salary figure.
- Four years of full-time study, starting as agreed. Teaching extends the employment accordingly.
How to apply
- Apply through Lund's vacancy portal by 29 November 2026, in English.
- Send a CV, a cover letter, study and degree certificates, transcripts, your master's thesis or a summary of ongoing work, and contact details for at least two references.
