About the position
Future wireless networks are expected to perceive and understand the physical world as well as carry data. This project at the Division of Signals and Systems, Department of Electrical Engineering, develops theory, algorithms and AI models for wireless localisation, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) and multi-modal models of the environment.
It combines wireless measurements with vision, geometry, maps and other sensors, and studies how many devices can learn and share these representations, with chances for research visits and internships at partner universities, institutes and companies.
What you will do
- Build multi-modal representations of physical environments from wireless, visual, geometric and map data.
- Develop methods for multi-modal-aided localisation, 3D reconstruction and cooperative perception, including differentiable rendering and simulation pipelines for wireless world models.
- Study robustness, uncertainty and generalisation, and test the methods in simulation and, where appropriate, experiments.
- Take doctoral courses, publish in leading journals and conferences, and spend up to 20% of your time teaching or on department work.
Who can apply
- A Master of Science in Engineering, or an equivalent foreign degree, in electrical engineering, computer science or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of at least two of: wireless communications, signal processing, statistical inference, optimisation, machine learning, computer vision and robotics.
- Strong Python programming, with experience of machine-learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Excellent spoken and written English; TOEFL or IELTS scores are welcome if you have them.
What is offered
- Full-time, fixed-term employment as a doctoral student in Uppsala for 48 months, with at least two supervisors.
- Start on 1 March 2027, or as agreed.
- The department pays a salary supplement on top of Uppsala University's local scale for doctoral students.
How to apply
- Apply through Uppsala University's recruitment system, linked below, quoting reference UFV-PA 2026/2989, by 30 November 2026.
- A description of your research interests and relevant experience (up to two pages) and a CV.
- Copies of your diplomas and certificates, your thesis or a draft of it, and any other relevant documents.
- You are encouraged to give the contact details of two academic referees.
