The University of Toronto announced the Presidents' Impact Scholarship Program on 5 October 2026, a $100 million fund for PhD students. An anonymous Canadian family foundation gave $50 million, and the university is matching it. Each scholar will receive $80,000 a year for four years, and the university says the program is meant to attract top PhD applicants from Canada and around the world.
The first cohort of 12 or more scholars starts in September 2027. Each year's group works on one societal challenge chosen for that year; the university gives "AI and Health" and "Sovereignty and the Arctic" as examples of the kind of theme it has in mind. The theme for 2027 has not been named yet.
The program is built differently from a standard PhD. Each scholar has two supervisors from different disciplines and spends time outside the university, for example in a government partnership, an international placement or an industry internship. Scholars also meet researchers working on the same theme across the university.
Candidates will be judged on academic excellence and on a record of innovation and solving real-world problems. The School of Graduate Studies says applications open in late fall 2026, and that eligibility rules, the application process and deadlines will be published then. Its program page lets you sign up for an email when the call opens.
