About the position

The ETH AI Center Doctoral Fellowship funds about 8 to 12 PhD students a year to do research on artificial intelligence at ETH Zurich. You propose your own project, either in the foundations of AI or linking AI with another field such as medicine, architecture, robotics or the social sciences.

Each fellow is supervised jointly by two professors from different fields, who share the supervision equally. The centre brings together more than 140 professorships from all sixteen ETH departments, plus groups at the University of Zurich and the University of St. Gallen. Fellows have their main office at the centre.

What you will do

  • Propose and carry out your own AI research project with your two supervisors.
  • Work with other teams, and take part in the centre's retreats, symposia and summits.
  • If you wish, follow the optional entrepreneurial or industry track to put your research into practice.

Who can apply

  • A master's degree in computer science, machine learning, statistics, physics, engineering, applied mathematics or a related field, finished at least three months before you start, and by June 2027 at the latest.
  • An excellent academic record, and ETH Zurich's general requirements for doctoral admission.
  • English good enough to discuss your work with colleagues and write up your results.

What is offered

  • A full-time, fixed-term doctoral post, normally for three years. Fellows making good progress can be extended by up to a year to finish the thesis.
  • Two supervisors from different fields.
  • A flexible start date, usually September 2027.
  • Training, affordable language courses, and support for combining work and family life.

How to apply

  • Apply only through ETH's online portal, linked below. Applications by email or post are not accepted.
  • Read the fellowship's guidelines and FAQ before you apply; they set out what to submit.
  • The deadline is 16:00 Central European Time on 27 October 2026.
